Culver Town Council Hears Request for Leniency of Permit Fees for Storage Project

Rob Hurford from Culver Storage Solutions went before the Culver Town Council members last week to ask for leniency in permit fees for the construction of storage units at West Jefferson Street and State Road 17.

Permits are needed by the county and the Town of Culver which will total about $17,000. The 14 storage units are permitted as a separate permit and it will be 65,000 square feet when completed.

Hurford said similar permits in other neighboring jurisdictions are much less costly.

Hurford thought the permit fees seem a little excessive and he said when he spoke with Marshall County Plan Director Ty Adley he said the county fees on each separate building structure permit application is set and cannot be adjusted.  Adley suggested going before the Culver Town Council to seek relief from local permits.

Hurford said the storage units would have no electric and no plumbing.  They would simply be concrete floors and the shell so the number of inspections would be minimal.   The project is ready to go, but it just needs to have permitting approved, but he feels the permit fees should be adjusted.

Culver Building Commissioner Steve Gorski said similar applications for separate cabin projects at Culver Academy went through without requests for leniency so it would be fair to keep things consistent.

Council member Bill Githens commented that this particular request should go before the Culver Plan Commission members first and then a recommendation from them should be heard before the town council.

In the end, the council voted 4-1 to send the request to the Culver Plan Commission members for their input and send a recommendation back to the council for final consideration.  Council President Bill Cleavenger voted against the motion.
