The Culver Town Council considered an additional reading in order to amend the golf cart ordinance.
The current amendment includes penalties which include a $150 fine per violation. It also added that a person who violates the ordinance more than three times or that involves conduct that would constitute a crime under the laws of the State of Indiana, the registration would be revoked at the discretion of the Culver Police Department.
Councilman Rich West presented two proposed changes under Section 11. The second proposed amendment is what the council members favored under Section 11. It states, “If a person is cited for a violation of this Ordinance more than three (3) times, the registration shall be revoked for that individual and/or golf cart and that individual and/or golf cart shall no longer be allowed to operate in the limits of the Town of Culver under this ordinance for a period of time of one (1) year. If a violation involves conduct that would constitute a crime under the law of the State of Indiana, at the discretion of the Culver Police Department, the registration shall be revoked for that individual and/or golf cart and that individual and/or golf cart shall no longer be allowed to operate in the limits of the Town of Culver under this ordinance for a period of time of one (1) year.”
Council member Sally Ricciardi commented that the amendment needs some work and the council should wait on a second vote until the wording is satisfactory. She wanted more time to review the proposals and have more time and take input to work on amendments. Councilman Bill Cleavenger stated that the second proposed amendment gives more authority to the Culver Police Department and he was in favor of that.
The council did vote unanimously to approve the second reading with the inclusion of the second amendment proposal of the golf cart ordinance. More discussion will be held before the approval of the third and final reading.
