Bremen Town Council Holds Special Session to Discuss  Golf Cart Ordinance Amendment

The Bremen Town Council members held a special meeting Thursday, August 17 to take comments on the proposed amendments to the golf cart ordinance.

Town Attorney Anthony Wagner said about 30 people were in attendance where several issues were addressed.  Many in attendance discussed the prohibition of golf carts on park grounds or other designated pedestrian paths.  Many older people use golf carts as a means of mobility in order to support younger family members in sporting events in the park. Town officials believe that is a valid use, but instances where golf carts interrupt a soccer game while driving on the playing surface during active play, or other destructive behavior, is negligent.

Other topics discussed included the age of children riding in a golf cart as a point of safety, the age of drivers, and operation of golf carts on county roads and on Plymouth Street in town which is a state highway.

The registration fee was discussed as well as the validity of a registration if the driver has been involved in the commission of a misdemeanor or felony.

Wagner said UTVs were not addressed and the resident who presented the information for discussion will attend a future meeting of the Bremen Town Council to talk about inclusion of UTVs as a permissible vehicle in Bremen.

The Bremen Town Council did approve the second reading of the ordinance, but will consider a few changes when the ordinance is presented for final approval in a future meeting.  The rules will go into effect following the adoption, while the registration fee will likely be effective beginning January 1, 2024.
