Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger updated the commissioners last week on an effort to name the new bridge on U.S. 31 in Marshall County.
Clevenger said he was asked to draft a resolution to provide to the commissioners to consider and forward to state legislators to rename the bridge on northbound and southbound U.S. 31 over the Elkhart Western Railroad between 13th Road and 14th Road near Plymouth after the late Owen Abbott. Abbott died in December 2018 in an accident at the railroad crossing. The Eastern Pulaski Middle School student was riding in a school bus at the time when the bus was struck from behind by a white 2016 Freightliner straight truck.
Commission President Stan Klotz said a study committee that reviews requests such as this will meet this summer.
The resolution is expected to be approved during the next Marshall County Commissioners meeting Monday, May 15. It will then be forwarded to the study group for consideration.
A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held to officially begin the bridge project. INDOT officials hope the project will be complete in the summer of 2025 and urged motorists to be safe when traveling in the area for the duration of the project.
