The Marshall County Commissioners and the Marshall County Council members approved a grant request submitted by Sheriff Matt Hassel during their respective meetings.
Sheriff Hassel first appeared before the council where he explained that he just received notice of the grant opportunity that is due June 9, but did not get a formal request to the council to be considered as an agenda item. By the time the council would meet next, it would be just prior to the due date so he wanted to get the request in as soon as he received notice.
Sheriff Hassel said the request is for a CHIRP, or Comprehensive Hoosier Highway Injury Reduction Program grant.
“It used to be the Operation Pullover and DUI Task Force,” said Sheriff Hassel. “They just combined them all and again the whole idea of the grant is to reduce injuries in highway accidents.”
The council members approved the request with a vote of 6-1 with Council President Jesse Bohannon opposed to the motion. He stated that he does not like the idea of sobriety checkpoints.
The commissioners heard the same request from Sheriff Hassel this week and unanimously approved the request.
