The Marshall County Commissioners considered a resolution last week that would propose naming the overpasses that are planned for construction over U.S. 31.
The effort is to rename the overpasses that will go over the Norfolk Southern Railroad between 13th Road and 14th Road near Plymouth after the late Owen Abbott. Abbott died on December 5, 2018 in an accident at the railroad crossing. The Eastern Pulaski Middle School student was riding in a school bus at the time when the bus was struck from behind by a white 2016 Freightliner straight truck. The school bus had stopped at the railroad crossing per regulations.
The resolution was unanimously approved by the commissioners.
The resolution will be sent to a study committee for a recommendation to the Indiana Department of Transportation.
A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held to officially begin the bridge project. INDOT officials hope the project will be complete in the summer of 2025 and urged motorists to be safe when traveling in the area for the duration of the project.
