Culver Town Council Considers Request for Placement of a Historical Marker

Culver resident John Houghton approached the Culver Town Council members last week with a request to place a historical marker on the west side of School Street by the Culver Elementary School to commemorate two moments in Culver basketball history.

Houghton said, “I guess we’ll probably forever hold the record for the highest number of points – 113 points – scored in one game against Winamac by Herman Sayger. I think the total game points were 154-3.  The other is a little more diffuse, but it is our first integrated basketball team.  We were not the first integrated basketball team in the state because Indianapolis originally had integrated schools and started segregating. Indianapolis had integrated teams before we did, but we were certainly the first in our area.”

Houghton noted that the marker will match the one at the Pioneer Camp site at State Road 10 and Queen Road.

The exact resting place for the marker will be determined with Utility Superintendent Bob Porter in terms of sight management.

The Culver Town Council approved the request with a unanimous vote.

A GoFundMe link has been created to collect funds to complete the project and the link is available here.  Donations may also be sent to The Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver, P.O. Box 125, Culver, IN 46511.
