Marshall County Commissioners, Council Approve 2028 Notice of Funding Availability  for Highway Department

Marshall County Highway Superintendent Jason Peters presented a request to the Marshall County Commissioners and the Marshall County Council concerning a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) for upcoming projects in 2028.

He explained that the plan was to include Bridge 88 (12th Road), Bridge 108 (7th Road) with 80/20 match.  However, with talks about closing intersections on U.S. 31 from State Road 10 to State Road 110, Peters thought about creating a truck route on Linden Road to ensure a way for travelers to get to major industry along the way.

Peters mentioned that the price tag with making Linden Road a truck route could be hefty, according to previous engineering estimates from State Road 10 to State Road 110.  Leaving it the way it is now the road would never last.

“We have railroads there and we have culvert pipes there,” said Peters. “Some of the major hiccups are right-of-ways, double utilities, a lot of large trees on the west side, purchasing right-of-ways, and at 17th Road there is a very dangerous hill.”

The commissioners approved the two bridge applications and Linden Road from State Road 10 to 17th Road and prioritize the importance of the projects.  The preliminary engineering put the Linden Road cost at $5.6 million with the county’s match of $1.1 million.  The entire match for all projects with the county would be over $2 million.

Peters stressed the county may not get funding for all three projects.

The request went before the council this week where the council members approved supporting the application for these projects in 2028.

The deadline to submit the application is December 2.
