Town of Culver officials provided an update this week on the upcoming broadband fiber project.
The process began in fall of 2021 with the formation of a Broadband Fiber Taskforce to address the demand for fiber service in Culver. The Taskforce later recommended the hire of a broadband fiber consultant to guide the town through the process.
A Request for Proposals was issued in late spring of this year and the Culver Town Council approved Surf Broadband Solutions after reviewing three proposals. In August, the Culver Redevelopment Commission approved funding for the contract with a total investment of $531,023.17. Surf is expected to invest $796,534.75.
Officials recently met with representatives from surrounding communities to understand the scope of the project and the permitting process.
The next step is to execute an agreement and to review a potential schedule. For now, the Culver Town Council has determined that many residents are part-time residents and it would be preferred to do a bulk of the installation process while many of them are in the jurisdiction.
Town officials are anticipated to develop a Communication Plan for residents and business owners that maps the implementation of the fiber network to ensure the smoothest process possible. Work may begin in spring 2023.
More information about the project will be presented to the public in future town meetings and in other communication efforts coordinated by the staff at the Culver Town Hall.
