ARGOS – During the Attorney Report section of the last Argos Town Council meeting, Attorney Derek Jones talked about a new agreement between the town and the Argos Community Schools new Student Resource Officer.

Jones said that he’s taken a look at the draft of the agreement and told the council that it would be back to the council at their next meeting.

Council Vice President Shawn Harley asked why the town needed an agreement when it’s the school’s employee.

“It’s a new concept. It’s not the same way we had this arrangement the last time. But, this officer’s going to be an employee of the school, going to be paid by the school outright. One hundred percent, but he still has to be at least a part time officer of the Town of Argos. Because of that, he may be driving a Town of Argos police vehicle. He may have a Town of Argos issued weapon. And we want to make sure that if he’s basically doing those responsibilities that he’s complying also with the Town of Argos requirements as it pertains to police officers,” Jones explained.

Jones reiterated that the new SRO for Argos Community Schools would be a full-time employee of the schools but would also be a part time employee of the Town of Argos.

“And there may be times when the town says, ‘we need you to fill in here or there for whatever’ and so we need that flexibility, but we also need the ability to be able to say, ‘you got to comply with the Town of Argos requirements’ as a police officer,” said Jones.

No action was needed from the council.
