The Marshall County Commissioners and the Marshall County Council recently reviewed a request for American Rescue Plan Act funding during their most recent meetings.
Previously, Commission President Kevin Overmyer said he was contacted by one of the facility’s board of directors about the status of security there. Overmyer toured the facility and discovered the need for more security at the Marshall-Starke Development Center.
Overmyer explained during the meeting that Marshall-Starke Development Center is a non-profit agency and does not have the funding needed for this type of upgrade. He said some of the American Rescue Plan Act funds could be used to assist with this project.
The facility is host to about 250 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Marshall County. There are 125 children who take part in educational opportunities and pre-school programs. There are 175 full-time employees.
Marshall-Starke Development Center CEO Rick Thompson was asked to seek quotes for security system for the facility and came back with one during the commissioners’ last meeting. Thompson said the Center’s board of directors approved the quote from Vermillion Systems quote for $62,267.60. He noted that several cameras are included in the quote. Police will have immediate notification if there is an issue and will have access to cameras to see what is happening before they arrive on scene. Several other features are included.
The commissioners approved the quote and sent the request to the Marshall County Council for the support for funding with American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The request was then taken to the Marshall County Council last week and the council voted unanimously to support the purchase with American Rescue Plan Act funds with an additional appropriation to be presented for formal approval during the November meeting.
