Bremen Town Council Discusses Golf Cart Use in Town Limits

The Bremen Town Council members will be reviewing the golf cart ordinance to see if any regulations need to be added to the document.

Bremen Town Council President Michael Leman brought up an issue with golf carts being driven on walking paths in the park which is not the intention of the walking paths.  He is concerned about safety and enforcement.

“They’re not supposed to be on them,” said Leman. “There’s a sign that says ‘no motor vehicles’.  Golf carts should not be on the sidewalks.  They’re supposed to be 16 and older licensed drivers to drive them.  It’s getting out of control.”

The current ordinance states that golf carts are permitted on the streets and alleys in the Town of Bremen, but are strictly prohibited for use on sidewalks and walking trails.

Park Superintendent Brian Main said in some cases, golf carts are used as a mobility device per ADA standards, but he believes that the majority of the issues are not caused by a physical disability.

The ordinance also includes fines of $100 for the first violation of the ordinance and a $250 fine for the second violation and every subsequent violation.

The council and the traffic committee will look further into the ordinance.  The idea of golf cart registration with an associated fee was mentioned, but no action was taken.
