Marshall County Highway Superintendent Seeks $1.2 Million in Extra Funding for Community Crossings, Additional Paving Projects

Marshall County Highway Superintendent Jason Peters asked the Marshall County Commissioners for support in appropriating additional funding for extra costs for Community Crossings Matching Grant projects and additional paving projects.

Current pricing and additional costs have caused Peters to request extra funding to complete the projects.

The shortfall in Community Crossings projects is about $380,000 while the shortfall in additional paving projects is about $805,000.  In essence, the additional funding requested is $1.2 million.

The commissioners approved a motion to ask the Marshall County Council to appropriate the extra costs from American Rescue Plan Act funds.  A formal written request will be presented to the council during their meeting next week, but the request will be formally voted on in August as it needs to be advertised.

The Community Crossings projects include Tamarack Road from U.S. 6 to County Line Road, Pear Road from 14B to 18B, and 15th Road from State Road 17 to Thorn Road at the railroad tracks.

The additional paving projects include 1st from Tamarack to County Line Road, Sycamore from 9th to U.S. 30, Union from 9C to 10B, and 12th Road from North Michigan to Maple.

The total cost, without the additional funds, was previously reported at about $3.1 million.

Officials from Milestone Contractors North may start the projects in the next few weeks.
