The Marshall County Council and the Marshall County Commissioners considered a grant request from the Marshall County Parks and Recreation Department during their separate meetings.

Park Board member Adam Thada explained to the council last week that the members oversee two main properties including Mill Pond and Memorial Forest and they would like to make sure they are making the best decisions for projects when considering the natural features at each location.

“Assessing a natural area is its own professional skill just like any of the other skills that we have – knowing what plants are there, understanding the soils, the water, and everything else,” Thada explained.  “In order to go forward with planning, we’re going to look at getting a natural features inventory from a professional firm.”

With that, Thada and Board President Greg Hildebrand asked the council for permission to seek a $25,000 grant from the Marshall County Community Foundation to complete that task.

A 10 percent match would be provided with funds budgeted for 2022 in the Park Board budget.

The council members unanimously approved the request last week and commissioners approved the same request during their Tuesday morning meeting.
