The Marshall County Commissioners recently approved an interlocal agreement with Fulton County in order to house inmates if there is an overcrowding situation at the Marshall County Jail.
Sheriff Matt Hassel took the agreement to County Attorney Jim Clevenger who said this will give the county another document to show the ACLU that the county is working to avoid overcrowding situations.
“In case our jail gets into a situation like we had a couple of years ago, we can take some of our inmates to Fulton County,” explained Clevenger. “We can take up to 10 maximum at $40 per day. It’s a second option – first option actually if we get into that kind of situation.”
Sheriff Hassel said it would be cheaper to house the inmates in Fulton County than Marshall County’s similar agreement with Elkhart County. That agreement will cost the county $60 a day.
The commissioners approved the agreement with Fulton County with a unanimous vote. The Fulton County Commissioners are anticipated to consider the agreement during their meeting Monday, September 20.
