Argos Town Council Discusses Police Building Issue

While looking into a request by INDOT to purchase parcels for an upcoming project by the Argos Police Department building, another issue came to light in the process.

Town Attorney Derek Jones explained to the Argos Town Council last week that INDOT wants to purchase a tiny parcel from the town in order to install ADA compliant sidewalks and curbs in the area of the northwest corner of the Argos Police Department Building on Walnut Street.

The town council approved that request.

Jones further explained that while looking into this, it was learned that a deed needs to be changed pertaining to the Argos Police Department building.

Jones stated, “Right now at the property, the police station, there’s two lots.  Those are deeded in the name of the Argos Emergency Services Building Corporation.  It’s a non-profit corporation and it was administratively dissolved by the Indiana Secretary of State back in 1993.  So, it’s no longer a viable corporate entity which causes problems.”

Jones said a resolution will need to be considered that states that the town is essentially one-in-the-same as the corporate entity that was dissolved and the town assumes ownership.

“It will kind of complicate things and just make a little bit more work for us,” added Jones.

The council members agreed that they would like to move forward with a resolution to correct the deed.  It will be an important step as the town continues with plans for a building addition that could be constructed in an area by the current Police Department.  The building would be used as the new Police Department and storage for the electric utility.

The current police department could be used to house full-time EMS personnel and fire equipment.

At the same time, a Quonset hut that houses equipment owned by the town, and an older building located by the EMS Department that has a skid loader and backhoe in it would be torn down as the structures are not in good condition.

A resolution to correct the issue with the deed will be presented to the council members for consideration at an October meeting.
