Argos Town Council Makes Appointment to Fire Protection Territory

The Argos Town Council members made their appointment to the newly formed Argos Fire Protection Territory during their Wednesday night meeting.

The council selected Argos Town Councilman Charles Randy Snead for a two-year term.  No other appointments have been made to the territory since its approval at the end of March.  One representative each from the town council, Green Township and Walnut Township will be on the board, plus the Argos Fire Chief who would be a non-voting member.

The formation of a Fire Protection Territory would raise money through an increase in property taxes to help pay full-time EMTs and pay for necessary equipment for the EMS and the Argos Fire Department.  The fire service would remain a volunteer service.

Three public hearings were initially held to pass the Fire Territory, but a majority vote of all entities was not achieved with the Green Township Advisory Board members. Only two members were on the advisory board at the time with one each voicing an opposite vote.  That created an inconclusive vote.  The majority vote was eventually achieved from Green Township Advisory Board members after a third representative was selected in a caucus to complete the board’s membership and a majority vote was approved during a special meeting.  The Argos Town Council and the Walnut Township Advisory Board members previously obtained a majority vote from eligible voting members.

An attorney would also need to be chosen to represent the entity with any legal matters.
