The Marshall County Commissioners opened bids Monday morning for proposed renovation work on the Marshall County Courthouse Clocktower.
Almost one year ago, Neil Hoerstman from Rowland Design and Principal Investigator Kurt Garner went over a report compiled to determine structural needs with the commissioners. They noted that overall the courthouse is structurally sound and only minor issues exist.
As for the clock tower, painting is the main concern to help deter any water damage. You can view website if you need the best water restoration services. There is wood exposed that needs to be covered to prevent any further damage from the elements. Hoerstman noted at the time that the tower is made of wood which is unique as other construction typically features stone.
A window needs to be replaced that will mimic historical character, insulation needs to be added along with other interior needs like clean-up of debris, some floor and joist adjustments, and work on the courtroom ceiling.
The clock dial will be restored along with LED backlighting.
Other external needs include the replacement of some windows in the courthouse, lintel work, courthouse ceiling repairs, masonry work, and several issues surrounding the east exterior stairway.
County Attorney Jim Clevenger opened five bids this week, however one company withdrew its bid due to a mathematical error. Companies submitted a base bid and six alternate bids. Alternate bid one would add costs to remove existing storm windows and replace them with new storm windows, alternate bid two would add costs to paint architectural elements like soffits and fascia, alternate bid three would remove and install new joint sealants around windows and doors, alternate bid four would remove existing sealant and install new joints around the column bases, alternate bid five would repair existing limestone and masonry cleaning, and alternate bid six would replace existing internal thermal windows.
