Fourth Public Hearing Set for proposed Argos Fire Protection Territory

A fourth public hearing is set for the proposed Argos Fire Protection Territory.

This public hearing will be for the Green Township Advisory Board members to take another vote on the proposed ordinance, resolution and interlocal agreement for the establishment of the Argos Fire Protection Territory.

At the March 4 public hearing, the Argos Town Council members and the Walnut Township Board members voted by majority to approve all documents to establish the Fire Territory.  Only two members were available from the Green Township Advisory Board to vote on the measure and there was a vote for the approval of the documents and one opposed, thus creating an inconclusive vote.  Since the establishment of the territory needs a majority vote of all entities involved, the territory was not approved.

The notice to taxpayers indicates that “the purpose of the public hearing is to reconvene and have a conclusive vote to adopt or decline the Argos Fire Territory”.

A Marshall County Republican Caucus is scheduled for Friday, March 19 to fill a vacancy on the Green Township Advisory Board so that third member would be available to vote to approve or not approve the documents necessary to establish the Fire Territory.

The fourth public hearing for the Argos Fire Protection Territory will be held Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m. ET at Argos Town Hall, at 201 W. Walnut Street where public comments will be taken during the event.

The formation of a Fire Protection Territory would raise money through an increase in property taxes to help pay full-time EMTs and pay for necessary equipment for the EMS and the Argos Fire Department.  The fire service would remain a volunteer service.
