Marshall County Coroner, Prosecutor Submit Grant Application Requests

Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman and Marshall County Coroner John Grolich recently submitted grant application requests to both the Marshall County Commissioners and Marshall County Council members for consideration.

Chipman asked to apply for a JAG grant in the amount of about $41,000.  Funds will assist the Marshall County Drug Task Force to identify, investigate and apprehend people involved in illicit drug trafficking, drug cultivation and the manufacture of drugs. It will also go toward dismantling drug networks and seizing drug shipments in Marshall County   Nearly $16,000 of that will be used for equipment and supplies and $25,000 will be used for drug buy money.

If awarded, this will be the third year the Prosecutor’s Office is awarded the grant.  A $10,200 local match is required which Chipman said can be covered with an in-kind contribution and Pre-Trial Diversion Funds.

Additionally, Chipman asked to seek a Drug Free Marshall County Grant for about $5,000 that will be used for the same purpose.

Coroner John Grolich asked to apply for a grant from the Indiana Department of Health to assist him with sudden infant deaths.

“I’ve been looking at equipment to fingerprint cases that I handle and this will give me the resources to fund that,” Grolich explained.  “A couple of years ago, we started collecting DNA on all of our cases so this is just one more feature for the folks of our county in the event they ever require that, or we need that in order to identify somebody.”

The coroner is also looking to apply for an IPEP Grant for two power lift cots in the amount of $80,000.  It does require a 20 percent match.  If the grant is awarded, Grolich said he would seek an additional appropriation for the local match in 2021.  The application is not due until July 1, 2021.

Both the commissioners and the council members approved the grant application requests with unanimous votes in their separate meetings.
