Marshall County Council, Commissioners Approve Grant Application Requests for Sheriff’s Department

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will have more recovery resources for incarcerated inmates and for the DARE programs in schools if they are successful in two grant requests.

At last week’s Marshall County Council meeting, Sheriff Matt Hassel explained that two grants are through Drug Free Marshall County.  One request is for $2,500 for the DARE Programs in all of the county schools.  Another grant application is for the Jail Chemical Addictions Program in the amount of $3,500.

“It’s to purchase the NA (Narcotics Anonymous) books and DVDs that we use when putting inmates through treatment,” commented Sheriff Hassel.

He added that the county officials’ approval of a Jail Program Director in May has proved to be invaluable.

“By allowing me to fill that position, you’ve opened a lot of doors because now I have somebody full time.  He’s going out in our community and we are getting so much support from our community.  The Art Studio is coming in now and doing classes.  We’ve got Grace College under WorkOne grants coming in and doing actual jobs training programs.  If we can reduce, or slow down, our recidivism rate, I think we can keep our jail population under control.”

A third grant application would request funds for a FARO 3D Scanner.

“This would be used by our reconstructionist with accidents.  It is a very expensive piece of equipment.  The last updated quote was $67,071.  To go after this, we plan to use policegrantshelp.com to help us purchase this.”

The council members approved the requests with a unanimous vote at their meeting last week.  The commissioners also unanimously approved the application requests.
