Bremen Town Council Asking for Feedback on Possible Allowance of Chickens in Town Limits

The Bremen Town Council members would like more public feedback from town residents on whether or not to allow residents to own chickens on properties inside town limits.

The issue was initiated during the town council’s last meeting in September where a resident asked if the animal ordinance could change to allow chickens at residences in town.  Mike Clinger already has three chickens in his yard and was approached by Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy with the current ordinance after receiving a complaint from a neighbor.  Currently, chickens are not allowed on properties inside the town limits.

He told the town council then that he believes that chickens make good pets and they serve as an educational purpose for children.  They also could also produce a source of food for owners.

During Monday’s meeting, Clinger returned with several pages of signatures on a petition his oldest daughter passed around the community along with comments received on Facebook.  Town Attorney Anthony Wagner noted that some of the people in support of having chickens do not live in the town limits, and perhaps the council should consider all comments of residents inside the town limits to make an informed decision.

Weldy said he contacted several municipalities concerning this issue and the only local area that allows chickens on town property is Bourbon.

Bremen Town Council President Bill Daily said allowing chickens may bring more coyotes into town when it is already a large safety issue to residents.
