The second phase of the proposed Veterans Parkway extension project received unanimous support from the Plymouth City Council Monday night.
The project would involve extending Veterans Parkway from north of the roundabout on Michigan Road west to Pioneer Road in Plymouth.
The proposal of the extension was brought before the Marshall County Commissioners earlier this month by representatives of USI Consultants. They will be working with the county and the City of Plymouth in the process of what the project will entail and how much cost will be involved.
The county is anticipated to submit the project for consideration this fall for federal funding in 2025. The preliminary cost estimate is about $14 million with the county’s portion to be about $2 million and the city’s portion to be about $911,000.
Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter said the road extension would be a benefit to the city with future growth in that area and more support to the businesses and industry already thriving in that corridor.
Mayor Senter said it would allow for easier access to that area of Plymouth from U.S. 31.
Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi told the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission members last week that they may be asked soon to help fund the extension of Veterans Parkway from North Michigan Road to Oak Drive north of the movie theater, and then west to Pioneer Drive which could lead to more development in TIF Districts in that area. He explained the project is a few years down the road, but planning for funding should begin now as the Plymouth City Council continues to dissect a five-year Capital Assets analysis from Baker Tilly.
