The Argos Town Council members took action Wednesday night to amend the town’s golf cart ordinance to reflect a change in operation of golf carts on certain roads.
Town Attorney Derek Jones changed the wording in the ordinance to allow the operation of golf carts on State Road 10 (Walnut Street) and old U.S. 31 (Michigan Street).
The town council members also discussed reenacting an annual registration fee to operate golf carts in the Town of Argos. The annual fee was dropped in 2019, but they agreed that the fee should be included in the ordinance. They agreed on a $40 fee that would be good from the month of June to the end of May the following year.
It was noted that officers with the Argos Police Department have to take time to inspect the golf carts to make sure they are in compliance with the town’s ordinance and state statute. The fee would go, in part, to the police department for the effort of the officers, and into the General Fund.
The council members approved the first reading of the ordinance with a unanimous vote. Town Attorney Derek Jones will amend the ordinance to include the registration fee for the second reading at the next meeting on Aug. 19.
