The Argos Town Council members agreed to amend the golf ordinance following information received during their Wednesday night meeting.
A complaint was received at the July 1 meeting about police officers ticketing people on golf carts and the use of golf carts on Walnut and Michigan Street, also known as State Road 10 and Old U.S. 31. It was thought that state statute prohibited them from operation on state highways.
After Town Attorney Derek Jones and the resident who complained looked into the issue, Jones told the council on Wednesday that he found that the state prohibits “off-road vehicles” on state roads. Golf carts, according to Jones, are not classified as “off-road vehicles” and could presumably be permitted to be operated on state roads.
After more discussion, the Argos Town Council members unanimously approved a motion to amend the current golf ordinance to allow for their operation on State Road 10, or Walnut Street, and Old U.S. 31, or Michigan Street in the Town of Argos.
