An Argos resident asked the Argos Town Council members about the use of golf carts on the streets in town.
The resident asked if changes were made to the ordinance as police officers have been pulling over drivers in town.
There is a portion of road known as Old 31 where people have been operating golf carts, but that area is currently under the jurisdiction of the state. The operation of golf carts on state roads is prohibited, including Old 31 and State Road 10 in town.
The area north of town from 17th Road to State Road 110 is owned by the county, but operation of golf carts on county roads is only allowed when the road has a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.
The resident was encouraged to speak to a representative with the state to discuss the issue of golf carts on state roads as the municipality has no jurisdiction on that statute.
According to the ordinance, in order to operate a golf cart on any street, alley or road within the corporate limits of the town, the operator of such vehicle must be a valid licensed driver. No golf cart may be operated in Argos at a speed greater than 20 mph on any street, alley or road, and further, every owner or operator shall obey any posted speed limit which is less than 20 mph. No golf cart shall be allowed in any area of town designated as a walking trail in a park area without the prior written approval of the Park Department.
Proof of liability insurance is also required.
