Update Given on Bremen Downtown Project

The downtown project in Bremen will begin sometime in August.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy gave an update to the Bremen Town Council members Monday afternoon.  The downtown project will include the replacement of curbs and sidewalks and new lighting on Plymouth Street between Montgomery Street to Washington Street ahead of a paving project planned on that street by INDOT.

Weldy said Water, Storm Water, and Street Superintendent Alex Mikel met with INDOT officials on Friday in a preconstruction meeting on the project.  INDOT plans to pave the entire length of State Road 106 through Bremen.

Weldy explained, “Walsh and Kelly crews will start on both ends of town working on their projects. State Road 106 is getting paved all the way through so they’re going to push us back with the downtown project to maybe the first part of August, depending on OCRA.  Then Haskins Underground is going to have 45 days to come in and get the water mains stuck in and the sewer laterals stuck in and get all of that stuff done before they come in and mill the whole downtown and replace all of the sidewalks and the street.”

The downtown project in Bremen is one of the projects in the Marshall County Crossroads Stellar Communities Initiative.

Weldy said OCRA told him a few weeks ago that funding may be delayed for the project, but officials are attempting to get the funding so the town can let the project for bid.  Funding was expected to be delayed as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mikel noted that the paving schedule will be aggressive when it gets underway.  Crews anticipate paving the entire length of State Road 106 through Bremen in four days.
