The Marshall County Commissioners stressed that there will be no layoffs at the Marshall County Highway Department.
Commission President Kevin Overmyer said there were rumors swirling that layoffs were anticipated at the Highway Department, but that is not the case. The issue came up during Monday morning’s Marshall County Commissioners meeting during Highway Superintendent Jason Peters’ report.
“It if gets to that point, we just won’t bring our mowing crew back in,” stated Overmyer. “We’ll just have the four regular people out mowing. There are no plans to lay anybody off.”
“Good,” commented Peters.
Peters noted that the road program will be customized to what revenue the county will actually receive each month. He expects funds to be drastically lower than anticipated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness addressed travel impacts and revenue issues in a March press conference with Governor Eric Holcomb as residents heeded the governor’s order to stay at home to slow the spread of COVID-19. He commented at that time that changes in traffic and fuel purchasing will have a direct effect on revenue for local roads and streets.
