Marshall County Treasurer Requests Security during Tax Collections

In light of the COVID-19 health pandemic, Marshall County Treasurer Angie Birchmeier wants to limit the number of residents paying property taxes in her office when the building eventually opens to the public.

She asked the Marshall County Commissioners for permission to have a part-time security guard in her office to handle the situation.

“I’d like to limit the number of people to maybe four or five at a time.  I don’t need people congregating and lined up down the hall,” stated Birchmeier.

She noted that plexiglass has been installed in the office for when patrons are allowed to come into the office as added protection for her staff and the public.

The commissioners granted permission to allow Rex Crump to fill in as part-time security detail in the Treasurer’s Office.

Birchmeier reminds taxpayers that the deadline to pay taxes is May 11.  Governor Eric Holcomb granted a 60-day waiver of penalties for non-escrow tax bills only.   Residents who have the ability to pay on-time are urged to do so.  She urges residents to call lending institutions to ensure escrow payments are being made.

Birchmeier also encourages paying taxes by mail.  Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope in order to get a receipt or include an email address to electronically receive that receipt.

The Town of Bremen and First Merchants Bank in Bourbon have agreed to accept tax payments.  Taxpayers can utilize the drive-thru at both locations.  In order to pay at these collection points, residents must include their tax payment and coupon in a sealed envelope. Residents are also able to pay at any Teacher’s Credit Union location in the drive-thru.

Payments can also be left in the drop boxes at the north and south entrances of the Marshall County Building.
