The Marshall County Council will hold a work session Monday to discuss the proposed jail expansion project.

During last week’s Marshall County Commissioners meeting, they decided to recommend that the county council postpone the third reading of a bond ordinance until more research and public input are gathered.  The second reading of the ordinance earlier this month gathered a 5-2 vote.  The third and final reading was anticipated in February.

In addition, Commissioner Stan Klotz will be contacting Samantha Goodson with Indiana Office of Court Services who will do an assessment of the court system.  They believe this may help in seeing what practices are working to help keep down the jail population.

The government leaders had been gathering information on expanding the Marshall County Jail to help alleviate the jail population and overcrowding situation that has led to several damage claims and a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union.  Adding a new jail housing pod would cost upward of $19 million with several million dollars in interest added on prior to the sunset of a General Obligation bond in 2040 to pay for the proposed project.

The Marshall County Council’s work session is planned for Monday, Jan. 27 at 9 a.m. in the second floor meeting room (Room 203) in the Marshall County Building at 112 W. Jefferson Street in Plymouth.
