Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger told the County Commissioners this week that he attended the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on a bill that would add a fourth court in Marshall County.
“We’re with some other counties that are adding some courts,” explained Clevenger. “It was approved and they did alter the bill for some of the other parts of the bill so it had to go back to appropriations. It’s supposed to then get out of the Senate and go to the House. Hopefully, we’ll see that bill proceed.”
The idea behind the third Marshall County Superior Court is to expedite cases to help in the reduction of the Marshall County Jail population. Statistics shared in previous meetings show that many inmates currently incarcerated in the jail are waiting for the resolution of their cases through the judicial system.
Clevenger noted that some issues may delay the start of the problem solving court. If it moves forward, the Governor will appoint the judge for the new court and then it will be an elected position following that.
Clevenger commented that there is space that could be used in the courthouse to house the new court with small remodeling costs.
He will keep the commissioners updated as the legislation moves through the state government.
