Marshall County Council Approves Additional Appropriation for Sheriff’s Department

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel presented additional appropriation and transfer requests to the county council last week.

Hassel asked to spend $135,000 out of the Jail LIT Special Purpose Fund in order to pay for up to 50 inmates to be housed at the Elkhart County Jail through the end of the year.  This will help alleviate overcrowding issues at the Marshall County Jail, if the Elkhart County facility has room available.

Hassel said on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the day before the council met to approve this additional appropriation, there were around 260 inmates in the jail.  The recommended capacity is 239 inmates.

He commented that Elkhart County officials have not yet signed the proposed interlocal agreement signed by Marshall County officials that states Marshall County will pay $40 per day per inmate.

Additionally, Sheriff Hassel requested a $100,000 additional appropriation out of the Jail LIT Special Purpose fund to pay for services for schematic designs, water resources and structural plans for the proposed jail addition.

All requests were approved with a unanimous vote.
