Town of Bremen Looking to Declare Property Unsafe

Bremen Town Attorney Anthony Wagner will start the necessary court paperwork in order to provide evidence that the property at 521 N. Center Street is an unsafe building.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy explained to the town council members last week that the owner of the building wants to tear down the building on the property, but can’t find half of what it costs to pay the contractor for demolition.  The structure cannot be repaired, according to Weldy.

He said it’s estimated to cost about $10,000 to tear down the building.

Marshall County Building Commissioner Chuck DeWitt previously looked at the building, but Weldy said a report still needs to be completed.  Wagner said he will speak with DeWitt and get more information before a complaint is filed in court.

Wagner said he needs documentation that the building violated the code enforcement and that it’s a public nuisance.

Weldy also mentioned that if a judge declares the property as unsafe nothing will be done with the property until 2020 as there is no more money in this year’s budget to tear down the building.

If the structure is demolished, the town could sell the property to recoup demolition costs.
