Preliminary cost estimates remain in the gathering process for the time being for the construction of an additional inmate housing pod at the Marshall County Jail.
Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger told the county commissioners Monday morning that the bond counsel, and representatives from Baker Tilly and RQAW should have those estimates by the time they meet next week for the jail committee meeting.
According to the preliminary time table, depending on what financing mechanism the commissioners choose, financing could be in place in March of 2020.
As far as the lawsuits filed as a result of the overcrowding issue at the Marshall County Jail, Clevenger said he is working with the Knight law firm on the defense of the Pro Se damage claims as well as those filed through the ACLU class action case. No hearings have been scheduled as of Monday morning.
Marshall County is working with Elkhart County in order to house inmates in the Elkhart Jail to alleviate the overcrowding issue. Clevenger said a revised interlocal agreement concerning housing had to be amended as it didn’t coincide with Marshall County’s claims process. That amended document was ready for the commissioners’ signature.
