Culver Town Council Tables Potential Funding for Regional Trail System

The Culver Town Council members discussed a request for support for funding a portion of a proposed regional trail system throughout Marshall County.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist said the proposal comes from Allie Shook who is the head of the transportation committee within the Marshall County Crossroads Regional Stellar Communities Designation Initiative.

“The idea would be a master plan to basically connect the whole county,” said Leist.  “It’s a regional system rather than just our loop around the lake.  It’ll be through Culver.  It looks more at how we can tie the communities together.  There’s three regional trails in our area so they’re thinking about how to connect as a county to those three.”

The request was for $2,500 as the town’s commitment, which is the request from all of the other communities in the county.

This is all contingent on if the county is designated as a Regional Stellar Community.

Councilman Bill Githens said he wasn’t in favor of the commitment.  He wanted to see what other communities are doing with the same request.  He also offered the opportunity to the Culver Redevelopment Commission who has supported trail funding for the Culver projects in the past.  Councilman Rich West, who serves as the CRC’s President, said he’d like to be approached for funding requests in one sitting so they can plan for the funding in the following year’s budget, rather than have to consider many requests in different meetings.

The council members tabled the discussion.
