Bremen to be Part of Unsafe Marshall County Unsafe Building Committee

The Bremen Town Council agreed to have a representative to be a part of the Marshall County Unsafe Building Committee.

Town Attorney Anthony Wagner made the recommendation to join the group as a town effort to develop a local unsafe hearing authority never got off the ground.

Wagner said the Marshall County Unsafe Building Committee has representatives from most of the municipalities and county officials who help make decisions on demolition requests from county and town officials.  Once a decision is made, the local leaders can take the orders to the judge for further action.  The town will be responsible for the entire process, and if the property is torn down and in the town’s possession, the property can be sold to recoup money spent in the action.

Wagner noted that a health department representative is on the committee, along with Building Commissioner Chuck DeWitt and an investigator from Adult Protective Services who bring different aspects of the demolition process to the table.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy is on the board already and the council agreed that he will continue in that capacity.

An ordinance will be developed by Wagner that will explain the town’s interest in joining the county effort rather than starting a local effort.
