Culver Police Chief Reminds Residents about Golf Cart Laws on Town Roads

Culver Police Chief Wayne Bean wants golf cart drivers to be aware that there are several rules of the road when utilizing town roads.

When residents apply for a permit in order to be permitted to drive their golf cart on town roads, they are given a list of rules and regulations as outlined in the town ordinance.

Golf carts are considered to be a slow-moving vehicle and are considered to be a motor vehicle so all motor vehicle rules apply.  The driver must be at least 16 years of age and a licensed driver.  Children under the age of 1 are not to be passengers on golf carts and passengers must be seated at all times.  In addition, adult passengers or drivers are not allowed to hold children on their lap while the vehicle is in operation.

Golf cart operators could be arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or in possession of an open alcohol container.

Proof of insurance is required.  Drivers must abide by all State and local traffic laws.

Golf carts are NOT allowed to be operated on public sidewalks or trails.  They are not allowed to park on sidewalks or trails.  Golf carts are not allowed in any area of the town designated as a park without the prior approval of the park superintendent.

Tickets will be issued.  The first offense is a fine of $100, $150 for a second violation, and $200 for a third violation.  If a person is cited for a violation of the ordinance more than three times, the golf cart registration will be revoked.

Chief Bean said there are 465 registered golf carts in the Town of Culver.
