The Marshall County Council members reviewed the request to create a fund in the budget in order to collect fees in a new ordinance.
The inmate processing fee ordinance states that a fee of $50 shall be added to the inmate’s fine and court costs as an additional cost in the event an inmate is convicted.
The fee may be waived if the inmate is found to be indigent, the inmate is being held for another agency for a per diem payment, or if the inmate is being held for another agency.
The use of the funds collected may be spent on inmate education and counseling, or equipment, education and training for the Marshall County Jail staff and jailers.
A public hearing held on the matter in February by the Marshall County Commissioners gathered no comments from residents.
The Marshall County Council members approved the request to create the fund for the collected fees with a unanimous vote.
