OCRA officials say the program provides funding for “placemaking and quality of life projects that spark community-wide conversations and creativity.” This year, OCRA encouraged applicants to incorporate education and youth involvement into their projects. In Plymouth’s case, OCRA says the new pollinator garden will be used by the public library and the Boys and Girls Club, and it will be easily accessible to everyone.

Protecting the habitats of pollinators like bees and butterflies is an increasing concern in Marshall County. Earlier this year, the Marshall County Soil and Water Conservation District got $2,500 from Arrowhead Country Resource Conservation and Development to add a pollinator habitat at Pioneer Seed in Plymouth. At the time, district officials said pollinator populations have been in decline for several years, due in part to parasites, pesticides, and habitat destruction.
