The Plymouth City Council members are in support of the Habitat for Humanity building proposal, but officials are going to look further into a different location for the project.
The proposal was brought before the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members last month. The project gathered support from the board members in the 200 North block of Water Street, but community members attended a Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals last week and voiced concerns about the location.
The Plymouth City Council members noted that those who commented during the meeting were in full support of the housing aspect of the project and that it is needed for a family who needs housing and who could meet the financial and sweat equity qualifications. The members of the public want the project to be moved to a parcel on the west side of the downtown area or simply in another location.
As part of the agreement moving forward, the city’s $50,000 contribution toward the project would be land for the project. Moving the project may involve more of a financial contribution on behalf of the city, according to City Attorney Sean Surrisi.
“We could find another site, but that will likely involve some outlay of cash to help either through a contribution to Habitat for Humanity for them to be able to acquire the land or the city to acquire it directly.”
Discussions are preliminary at this point.
Surrisi said he would contact Habitat for Humanity officials and continue to work out a solution that works in order for the project plans to continue.
