Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger discussed a possible intergovernmental agreement to help alleviate overcrowding at the Marshall County Jail.
Clevenger told the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning that he received an email from Sheriff Matt Hassel about the situation. Hassel thought maybe an intergovernmental agreement with another county with an agreed compensation could help. However, Clevenger wasn’t given a jurisdiction or a compensation rate to move forward with the agreement.
Sheriff Hassel wasn’t at the commissioners meeting on Monday to provide any other details.
Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin confirmed that Sheriff Hassel contacted him at the Starke County Sheriff’s Office requesting information. If an agreement were to be approved between the pair, it would be if or when bed space is available at the Starke County Jail.
The Marshall County Drug Task Force has been making an effort to eradicate drugs from the streets. The direct result of those recent efforts has increased the jail population. The other county and municipal law enforcement agencies have also made arrests on a variety of other charges as well as warrants.
Clevenger said he’d meet with Sheriff Hassel to talk about this further before making a recommendation to the commissioners for approval.
