The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members considered a request from Plymouth Fire Chief Rod Miller to provide stand-by medical coverage for the Notre Dame football team at the Culver Academy facility from Aug. 3 to Aug. 7.
Miller commented that Notre Dame usually makes a donation to be placed into the city’s monetary gift fund. The donation is determined by the charge per hour the staff is there to provide assistance. They are usually there for about four hours a day.
This is the fourth year that Notre Dame officials have requested assistance from Plymouth EMS.
Plymouth City Councilman Gary Cook asked if an agreement is in place for this type of request. He also inquired about liability. City Attorney Sean Surrisi explained that if the school simply makes a donation it is easier than it being spelled out in an agreement. He added that there is no added risk to the city in terms of liability as they’re participating in activities that are within the normal operations of the staff with no other risk envisioned.
Cook also asked if the donation has to be placed into the monetary gift fund or if the money can be placed in a different fund to be used in other appropriations. It was explained that the money donated by Notre Dame does not have restrictions for its use so the money can be used for necessary needs with the exception of operating expenses or wages.
With that, the Plymouth Board of Public Works members voted unanimously to approve the request.
