Marshall County Highway Department to Seek Additional Funding

Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters will be asking the county council members in August for additional funding to complete some of the road work yet to be completed this year.

Peters told the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning that some funds are running out of money to pay for materials.

“As it stands right now, in MVH we’re roughly at $103,365.69 in stone,” said Peters. “Our bituminous is $80.20. Local Roads and Streets, stone-wise, we’ll have a zero balance and bituminous we’ll be at $178,634.”

Peters noted that several miles still need to be paved or chip-sealed before they close the books on the 2018 road program.

“If we continue paving, there’s roughly 9.25 miles left on the actual road program. Chip and sealing we’ll have 11.5 miles. If we put the extra 10 miles in that we talked about with the two townships that would put us at 21.5 miles. We still have 6 miles of double chip and seal left.”

The council members previously approved $1.5 million to be used to repair roads, culverts and bridges due to flooding. A reimbursement from FEMA is still anticipated to offset some of those costs. As reported yesterday, the final paperwork was given when FEMA representatives were in the county last week to gather more information. Peters has not given an estimate as to what FEMA could reimburse the county.

The commissioners did commend the highway department on their efforts this year.
