Old U.S. 31 south of U.S. 6 will not be renamed.
The issue came up during last week’s Marshall County Commissioners meeting. Commissioner Kurt Garner commented that a homeowner on that stretch of road thought of renaming it State Road 931 rather than Michigan Road. Garner said the resident thought that it might entice people to drive on the road knowing that it’s a state road and provide more traffic.
Garner noted that he’s not in favor of it, but brought it to the commissioners for other opinions.
The action of renaming the road and the process of having all of the homeowners go through the process of a road name change was also thought to be a hassle.
Commissioner Kevin Overmyer agreed with Garner in his opposition. He said when the new bypass came in the homeowners went through that process when LaPaz residents wanted Michigan Road to go north into LaPaz. Also, it would affect the 911 system.
Commissioner Mike Delp was opposed to it as well so the issue died for lack of support.
