Without a county engineer in place since the position came open in December of 2017, the Marshall County Commissioners may move Highway Supervisor Jason Peters into an interim highway superintendent position.
Commissioner Kevin Overmyer noted that the three commissioners received a letter from Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele in April that outlines an interim county highway superintendent position. The position would be in place until a county highway engineer is hired.
Overmyer said Highway Supervisor Jason Peters has put in a lot of overtime hours to compensate for the lack of a highway administrator with paperwork on top of his regular duties and should be compensated for his time. Overmyer suggested placing Peters into the interim highway superintendent position at a pay of $57,080.80.
At the recommendation of Kent Irwin, with the creation of the interim highway superintendent position, the positions of highway supervisor and highway administrator would dissolve. The Marshall County Council members would have to amend the salary ordinance if this decision is approved and be retroactive to the date when the administrator position was vacated. Additionally, compensation of $676.46 per month would be effective.
Once a full-time highway superintendent or county engineer is hired, the interim position would dissolve.
No decisions were made during Monday morning’s commissioners meeting, but discussion will continue during a July meeting. The county council may also take up the conversation at their next meeting in July.
