Veterans Service Officer to Attend At-Home Profession Training

Marshall County’s Veterans Service Officer will attend training to help her better understand medical terminology, coding and ethics to assist veterans, widows and widowers in the claims process.

Pam Schweizer-Betz told the Marshall County Council this week that there are a lot of medical terms used on claim forms that she’s not familiar with.

“I have to look at the veteran’s or widow’s finances, medical conditions, medications, what facilities they go to and that sort of thing,” said Schweizer-Betz. “On the medical conditions and medications, I’m not a nurse. I’m not a doctor. There would be a lot of stuff in here that I could actually use to speed up what I do to assist that veteran or widow.”

The cost of the class is about $2,500 which includes a $500 discount. The money is not in her budget as the VA has a lot more training that she needs to attend which will take care of most of her budget. Schweizer-Betz said all of the material is included, but she will need to supply a computer, internet and her time to attend the training.

The council voiced unanimous support for an additional appropriation to be advertised for the Veterans Service Officer to attend this training. They all agreed that county officials need to do what they can to help the county’s veterans with as much assistance and information as possible.
