Commissioners to Hold Public Hearing on Cumulative Bridge Fund Increase

Marshall County Commissioners (L to R) Mike Delp, Kevin Overmyer, Kurt Garner

A public hearing is set for Monday, March 19 to hear comments on the proposed increase to the Marshall County Cumulative Bridge Fund.

The proposed property tax increase is for $.0524 cents per $100 assessed valuation. The fund helps collect funds to rebuild deteriorated bridges. The average taxpayer would see an increase of $26.20.

County officials are anticipating a deficit in that fund in 2019 which causes concern about funds to rebuild bridges for public safety. Officials say the current rate is not allowing the county to keep up with the high cost of repair of bridge infrastructure for the safety of the community.

After public comments are heard, the commissioners will consider the adoption of an ordinance establishing the new rate. If approved, a notice of adoption will be published within 30 days of the adoption of the fund. Upon publication, 10 or more taxpayers may file a petition with Marshall County Auditor Julie Fox no later than 30 days after the publication.

If a certain number of petitions are filed, a public hearing will be held and a determination will be made. If approved, that paperwork will be filed with the Department of Local Government Finance. The rate would go into effect in 2019.

The rate will increase property taxes by $26.20 per one hundred thousand in assessed value, creating a revenue increase of approximately $1,325,346 at the current unit.

The commissioners have set a public hearing date of Monday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the second floor meeting room in the Marshall County Building at 112 W. Jefferson Street in Plymouth.
