The Marshall County Commissioners would like to see what other counties do in terms of mailbox replacement during plow events.
Highway Supervisor Jason Peters presented a proposed policy during the last meeting that outlined a procedure of how mailboxes are replaced if damaged during a snow event. If the force of the snow knocks down a mailbox or damages a post, the county highway will not accept responsibility for that. If the plow strikes a mailbox, the highway department will replace it.
Peters told the commissioners Tuesday morning that they have replaced around 30 to 50 mailboxes and simply issue a standard mailbox and assist the homeowner with installation. He added that not every person in the county needs to move their mailbox back off the road. Peters suggested that those who experience constant issues may want to consider moving their mailbox back a few feet off of the road.
Commissioner Kurt Garner continues to support giving residents a stipend to help toward replacement costs. A claim form would need to be filled out with a review of the situation. If repeated incidents occur, the homeowner may be asked to move back the mailbox.
No decisions were made during Tuesday morning’s meeting. The commissioners asked that Peters gather more information about similar policies in surrounding counties in order to formulate a policy for Marshall County. Peters will present information at a future meeting.
