The first day of candidate filing ended with a few contested races in Marshall County. The county recorder’s race already has two candidates: Republicans Janet Howard and Anna “Buffy” Breeding. Meanwhile, current recorder Marlene Mahler is running against Bruce Snyder for Union Township trustee.
Several Marshall County officials are seeking reelection, including Clerk Deb VanDeMark, Auditor Julie Fox, and Assessor Debbie Dunning. Matt Hassel is running for his first full term as sheriff. He’s currently finishing the term begun by former sheriff Tom Chamberlin.
District 1 County Commissioner Kurt Garner and District 4 County Council member Judy Stone are also running for reelection, as are West Township Trustee Terry Lee Borggren and Center Township Board member James Baldwin.
Those planning to run for elected office this year have until February 9 to file their declarations of candidacy.
