The downtown revitalization project which includes new streets, sidewalks, curbs and lighting for the Town of Bremen has been postponed.
Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said the delay could be to the town’s advantage.
“With help from INDOT, they’re going to pay for a few more things that’s going to save us some extra money,” said Weldy. “They’ll pay for environmental studies and things like that that we won’t have to pay for. It’ll save us $20,000 to $30,000 or maybe a little more when it comes to that.”
INDOT has earmarked $1.2 million for this project which includes lowering the streets downtown.
“They have to take the street downtown and they’re going to have to lower it 12 inches. They’re taking all of the asphalt off and taking the brick pavers out to put down a sub street and rebuilding the whole street from there. That’s in the three block area downtown. Downtown could be shut down for 120 days. Right now and over the years INDOT has come in and taken an inch-and-a-half of asphalt off and put two inches on to the point where we’ve lost all of our curbing downtown. The water is running onto our sidewalks and in our businesses.”
Crews will also assess storm sewer drains to see if anything needs to be upgraded during the process.
Weldy said the project is now anticipated to begin in 2020 instead of 2019.
